Mr. Vernon...
Mr. Vernon is portrayed as an evil teacher and is the one who organises the dreadful detention. John Hughes has constructed Mr. Vernon to be a power seeking and cruel teacher who doesn't try to understand the teenagers. Mr. Vernon wears a suit which reflects his pretentious and patronizing attitude. We are first introduced to him when he struts carelessly from the door of the library, this shows that he is in charge and is more superior than the students. It's almost as if Mr Vernon is inwardly laughing at the students. From the beginning, we can already identify his authority from the way he enforces obedience to the students. Later on in the film, Mr Vernon was given a small talk by Carl the cleaner about the way he thought of the students, Carl was able to influence Mr Vernon and challenge him to rethink about whether he had treated the students in a correct manner. However, we didn't get to see if Mr Vernon had changed his way of thinking or not, John Hughes has left that up to us to decide.
