Outline of the context
‘The Breakfast Club’ is a classic 80s high school teenage movie, based around five students all representing the main traditional stereotypes of high school. The students were brought together to attend a dreadful day in detention on a Saturday. The stereotypes that attend include the basket case as Alison, the princess as Claire, the brain as Brian, the athlete as Andrew and the criminal as Bender. Throughout the movie all of the students start to get to know one another and understand each others' pressures and life complications. As the movie progresses all social barriers are broken down as they all become friends and engage about each others talents or how they got into detention. Although strong bonds were formed and Brian states his belief of the start of a friendship, reality kicks in when Claire points out that they all come from completely different cliques and will not be able to remain friends as there still remains a social hierarchy. Throughout the end of the movie stronger bonds were formed between Claire and Bender and between Alison and Andrew. The conclusion of the movie outlines their alliance against Mr. Vernon and them being formed a club or to be considered as there own clique naming themselves ‘The Breakfast Club’ . The movie came out February 1985, therefore there are some differences that occur in the movie. For example the fashion sense is completely different to modern day trends, Claire has a pixie cut which was a popular trend in the 80s. Bender had a punk kind of look which helps reflect on his over all stereotype with a reckless, don't care attitude. The dance scene that is shown is a very 80s kind of movie tradition compared to these days it would be more of a rare circumstance to see a random dance scene. The language in the movie is also different to now a-days for example the insults that are given like "eat my shorts".
